Life in Bulgaria

I am slowly transitioning to a life in Bulgaria. It has taken a long time to reach this stage, not helped by the disruption caused by the Covid pandemic. The roots lie deeper in the past when I fell in love with a woman from the Black Sea coast – not quite a mermaid, but a vision in white beneath the full moon and perfect for me.

We have found a lovely home in the village of Avren, close to the large city of Varna. It is on a plateau about 300 metres above sea level with the clearest of air and wonderful night skies. We can see a small slice of the sea between a gap in the hills when the day is clear and we are looking from the right vantage point.

Purchasing the house brought many challenges due to various legal issues tangled with the personalities of some of the people involved.

Renovating the house to make it habitable and to our liking is bringing further challenges and there is a long way to go. We are dependent on builders because I struggle to put up a shelf straight, but I am hoping that my new lifestyle will enable me to improve my DIY confidence and/or competence (both would be preferable, but i would settle for either).

The village has its share of interesting characters. More later!

Thanks to BREXIT, we have also had to jump through a lot of hoops to obtain the necessary visa to allow me to stay for longer than 90 days in every 180 days. In fact, I am so good at jumping through hoops now I could probably put on a show at the Dolphinarium in Varna’s sea garden – Derek the Dolphin!

I will try to post regularly about our life in Avren, about its people, about life in Bulgaria more generally, and about anything else that come to mind. I am still working on how to structure all this and what kind of category headings I will be using.
