My first travelogue entry for today provides very precise details of how I spent my dwindling funds and exchanged my last 10 dinar note for Austrian shillings. I shall spare you the list of food and snacks I bought, but will note that I saved 1 shilling to use the toilet…
…well invested!
This kind of detail is what sets me apart from other – and more successful – travel bloggers.
The “courier” on the coach passed around a bottle of Metaxa and yesterday afternoon it all got a bit much for him and he passed out on the back seat. The main driver was a bit reckless and on several occasions last night it felt that we were going to drive over the edge of the mountain roads. Or road – this would only happen once. Perhaps the Metaxa was a good idea, but not shared with the spare driver.
Around 19.00 we were on the autobahn to Salzburg and the German border when we had to stop because of smoke coming out of the front of the coach. The engine was in the rear. Turns out it was some kind of electrical burnout that took only 10 minutes to fix. We crossed into Germany at 19.45, a rather appropriate time historically.
It has been a day of international cuisine – breakfast in Yugoslavia (never became a big hit for Supertramp), lunch in Austria and dinner in Germany. I mentioned cuisine, but we won’t reach France until tomorrow. Oh, now I have given the game away – no more plot tensions. But please check in to see how it all ends. At last!!
