Big Trip Day 114 – Matala Peach

The title is as intended, not a typographical error. Today’s (3rd August 1973) very short entry in my travelogue refers to the events of last night. We were joined by the three US marines again. Last time they brought a large tin of kidney beans (why?!), but this evening they have brought two 7lb tins of peaches.

The tins were passed around and with a mixture of forks and fingers we shared the lovely peaches. I noted that I drank quite a bit of the juice. Beach life is indeed a peach.

I left the party just after midnight. I was not drinking tonight (apart from the tinned juice) because I made myself rather ill last night by consuming too much wine – 3 bottles of white and a dash of red. I don’t know how big the bottles were, but I can’t imagine they were standard 750ml bottles. But enough to make me wish I hadn’t indulged so freely.

My next post will be on 5th August, when more tins arrived. We were starting to feel like part of a cargo cult – although this is a 2025 observation and not likely to have been part of our thinking at the time. The past always looks different in retrospect!
