We arrived back in Matala early yesterday evening. It is great to be back, although there are a lot of new faces. Tom is still here. If I remember correctly, he was from Sweden and had a thing about Bob Dylan’s Don’t Think Twice. If I remember incorrectly, he could have been from Barcelona and a fan of Frank Sinatra.
I think this is when we met Mike from Minnesota. We all played a silly circular word game called “What” (I think I still vaguely remember the rules) and had a long discussion about the lettering running through seaside rock. There were letters from my parents and my friend Iain waiting for me. These are the kind of details a good travel writer records in their notebooks.
I have mentioned music a few times in my posts about Matala. The place certainly had its own soundtrack. Alongside Pink Floyd and 2001: A Space Odyssey, there was plenty of local music playing in the cafe. I just had to buy the greatest hits of Demis Roussos when I returned home. Seriously. His song Forever and Ever will forever evoke for me the spirit of Matala, I heard it so many times there!
My next update will be Day 112 (1st August).
