Big Trip Day 97 – Karpathos

Yesterday we caught the 11.30 hrs boat from Piraeus to this quite remote island in the south eastern Aegean Sea. The journey took 27.5 hours. The “we” consists of Jim from Atlanta and myself. You may recall we traveled together to Matala a life time ago on this blogging odyssey.

We disembarked at Karpathos (the main port on the island) around 15.00 hrs this afternoon, and it looks like we slept on the beach until midday tomorrow. My travelogue entries are a bit scant and confused over the next few days. I remember that we knew we would be here for a week because that is when the next boat arrives – and leaves.

Back here in modern times, I checked for some details about the island. It is apparently the birthplace of Proteus from Greek mythology, and a stopping off point for Jason Donovan and his Argonauts. I don’t think they stayed for a week. They probably read the online guide which suggested 2 to 3 days was long enough for a visit. However, it appears that the island is now very popular with tourists due to its gorgeous beaches and wild landscapes. According to Wikipedia, the island has preserved some “peculiarities” of custom and dress due to its remoteness.

A quick scan through my trusty but scant travelogue shows that nothing much really happens until Day 101 (21st July), so I will see you again then if you can bear the suspense.
