Yes, still here! The travelogue entry for today covers last night and the early hours of this morning. I wrote it while sitting under a tree in the late afternoon.
I’m afraid it does not reflect well upon the beach-life me of years ago. OK, being honest, maybe it is not too far removed from how I have been in various stages of my life since then. I can take it.
…and last night there was getting drunk
I noted that I was swaying in my chair and smiling. I tried to record what I actually consumed, but I am not sure of the volume. I noted that I drank one and a half bottles of raki with coke, but I cannot believe they were standard 70cl bottles. Raki is popular throughout Greece, Albania and Bulgaria. It is a spirit distilled from grape pomace – the skins, seeds and pulp leftover from wine-making.
I took time out from raki-and-coking to smoke a little dope on the beach, and then returned to the cafe to start on another bottle. I only got half way through that one before making my way back to base camp. I got to within ten feet of my sleeping bag before passing out between two trees. I thought I was only there for a few minutes but I later learnt that I was there for about an hour.
Perhaps not the most edifying of experiences, but it is part of my story.
