The opening words of this travelogue entry are taken from D. H. Lawrence’s short story On The Lago di Garda as I remember, but I have not been able to find the actual quotation…
And before I go to sleep, there are the stars above me…and the moon and silent clouds and darkness…and waking during the night, I see even more stars and the moon has sailed above the trees and the sea thunders and somewhere Pink Floyd’s “Ummagumma” (sides 3 and 4) is playing and I listen with joy in my heart, although my body burns with soreness from too much sun…hardly able to move…
The map shows campsites and restaurants, but back in 1973 we set up camp on the beach. A lot of my writing was done at the “Cafe”. My memory tells me it was known as “Mama’s Cafe” and was used as a postal address. I need to research this a bit further, seeing how my reminiscing has revealed flaws in my memory. I know it had a toilet that was often prone to overflowing. Happy days!
