Big Trip Day 58 – To Matala

The boat departed Piraeus around 19.00 hrs on Day 57 and arrived at Heraklion at 07.00 hrs this morning. I don’t think I had the luxury of a cabin so I must have huddled down somewhere on board to get a bit of sleep. I need to reprimand my younger self for not keeping a more comprehensive account of my travels.

I met up with Jim from Atlanta in Georgia, who said he worked in textiles. At least I think that’s what he told me because my notebook just says…

Jim (textiles), Atlanta, Georgia.

We walked to the bus station and hung around until we caught the 15.30 bus to Matala. We arrived in Matala at 18.15.

Matala. So many memories and emotions are attached to this place. I did not leave here until Day 89. A few things of note occurred during this time and I will write about them on the appropriate days, but you will be relieved to know I won’t be posting every day. My notebook is full of pretentious creative writing, and the dubious insights and wisdom of a lad coming to the end of his teenage years.

Just to set the scene – these notes were made at…
