Big Trip Day 51 – Olympia

Emerged from my sleeping bag around 09.00 hrs. Spent a bit of time playing with the dog that was making all the noise last night. Doug had talked about The Hound of the Baskervilles, which was quite accurate given the ferocity of the barking. However, as is often the case, the dog was actually quite soppy and small.

I hit the road around 11.00 after saying farewell to my newest friends. I stopped in the shade after walking about half a mile, overlooking the Olympic stadium. I was there until 14.30, but did not find a lift due to the low level of traffic. I thought about catching a bus to Argos – the city, not the store! I returned to the main car park in Olympia to expedite this new plan.

However, I ended up sitting in the shade with three American girls. They were a bit disappointed because they thought they were visiting Mount Olympus – only just over 500km off-target! To assuage their disappointment, I gave them a “knowlegeable” mini-tour of the ruins of Olympia. In return, they went out of their way to give me a lift back to town, where I found the youth hostel. I also found myself sharing a room with girl from Australia. All perfectly innocent.

Tomorrow finds me in Olympia, still unable to escape. In retrospect, it sounds like an episode from The Prisoner, with Olympia as the village. And me as Number 6 of course.
