My travelogue entries for today include a recap of last night, when the USAF guy and I went to the “Kulture Park” in the city. This was basically a small fairground with balloon sellers, shooting stalls, a big wheel and chain swings. There was also a sad little zoo.
This morning we visited the Roman Catholic church ( a modern building) and the offices of THY (Turkish Airlines). A few days ago I revealed my plans (to myself) in the travelogue – I never realised I had a plan! One option was to travel to my next desitination by ship, but that would mean waiting around for another three weeks or so before the next sailing. Therefore, I bought an airline ticket for this destination, departing tomorrow.
There was a bit of complicated discussion about paying for the ticket. If I paid in local currency I needed a receipt from the bank and would have to pay tax. I therefore paid in pounds sterling – a £10 traveller’s cheque and a £10 note from my dwindling financial reserves. But I got the equivalent of about £7 change! Such extravagance for a poor hitch-hiker!
I saw the USAF guy onto his airport bus – he was flying to Istanbul today. I found myself another hotel for the night, one that was reasonably clean.
It should be easy to work out my destination for tomorrow – it will be the “Edinburgh of the south”. See you there!
