Big Trip Day 41 – Ula to Kusadasi

[A little late in posting – Day 41 is 22nd May 1973 ].

On the road by 09.00 hrs and walked for about an hour. Just as the road began to climb, a dormobile pulled up and the lovely German couple inside gave me a lift. She was a dance teacher and he was a journalist. They were undertaking a trip around the world.

We passed through Mugla and Soke. We stopped to view the ruins of the ancient town of Ephesus. They dropped me at the edge of Kusadasi and I walked a couple of kilometres to find a hotel.

I ended up in a reasonably priced pension in this very touristic town. Two large ships were moored in the harbour. English gentlemen and ladies promenaded in their smart-casual wear. Souvenir shops everywhere. And this was 1973.

On the way here we stopped on the shore of Lake Bafa and enjoyed a wild swim in the turquoise waters. The lake used to be part of the Aegean Sea in times of antiquity but was closed off by the accumulation of alluvial deposits from the river. Now I sound like some kind of geological expert, thanks to Wikipedia. Ironically, I failed my “O Level” geography. It is only in later life that I have realised the value of the subject. I think it just wasn’t packaged right when I was at school.

Today has been a lovely day with golden moments. The soundtrack of our journey in the dormobile included The Byrds ( remember Chestnut Mare?), Pink Floyd, Joplin, Dylan and Pentangle.

Tomorrow will find me sleeping in a town close by – less touristy and therefore a bit cheaper. My notes reveal that I actually have a travel plan. This was news to me!
