Let me introduce you to our weekly village lottery. To enter, every Tuesday evening I drag my entry ticket (Number 5) to the end of the lane and place it carefully by the side of the road. I check on Wednesday evening to see if I have been lucky. Alas, not today.
I check again on Thursday evening, but this week I was unlucky. Last week, Friday was a lucky day and I had a win. Today, alas again, I have not been lucky. I dragged the bin back to its proper place in our garden, hoping for better luck next week.
We live in a random village. The rubbish collection day is supposed to be Wednesday, but sometimes it changes unannounced to Thursday, and infrequently to Friday. To keep the game interesting, another level of randomness is introduced by the collectors. They follow a random route through the village, so most weeks some streets are missed.
What to do? I will keep on playing, the uncertainty gives a little frisson for these special days of the week and it is worth it for the little dopamine hit an emptied bin provides.
LOL!
